Consider the Style of Your Home

Before the painting starts, the style of your house should play an important role in the decision-making process. “The paint color cannot be arbitrary. When choosing an exterior color for your home, it’s important to know your home’s style and what colors actually complement it,” says Malka Helft of Think Chic Interiors. For example, many homes benefit from contrasting colors, like a colonial with a crisp white or light color paired with black accents.

Alternatively, a Tudor is perfect for light creamy colors and dark warm accents, while terracotta and beige tones work will with a Mediterranean style. “Other homes can handle some serious color,” Helft notes. “Try a happy, out of the box pastel such as pink [or] yellow on a Victorain or tones out of nature [like] sky blue or green sage on a cottage.”

1. White

A classic choice that offers plenty of versatility, white is always a great exterior color choice. “White is a clean slate, and I think it’s always a wonderful option for exterior paint on a house. If applicable, I like to do a bold front door and window trim to show a pop of color and warm up the exterior of the home, says Eleanor Trepte, a designer with Dekay & Tate. Don’t forget that landscaping and hardscaping also add color to the front of your house. So choose accent colors that will blend well with a crisp white home.

2. Gray

If you love using gray tones inside your home, then your favorite shades will accent the best parts of your home’s exterior. It can be overwhelming to choose between all of the various gray paint options, so start by figuring out if you want a gray with a cool or warm undertone. Cool tones are sophisticated and offer a fresh look on an exterior.

While warm tones are more dramatic and create a moodier tone next to dark and wood trims. Both have fantastic overall looks, and once you find the tone that works for your home, gray is always a winning choice.

3. Green

If you’re looking for variety in outdoor paint colors, green is the way to go. From deep earthy tones and bright tropical colors to mossy shades and soft muted greens, the many hues can give your house’s exterior a traditional feel or a modern flair. When searching for the perfect shade of green, this is definitely one of the times to take the style of your home and the overall look and feel of your environment into consideration before choosing a shade.

Jerad Gardemal, Founder and Principal Designer of JF Gardemal Designs, offers this smart tip when choosing the right color paint especially if you are looking to put your house on the market: “It’s important to be aware of the current color trends because your house is in competition with new developments around the corner.” He also shares that “if you don’t have a relationship with a professional designer, usually the local paint store can give you the names of exterior colors which have been popular over the last year or so.”

4. Adding Drama With Black

Are you worried that your house looks boring and basic? Does it lack any interesting architectural appeal? Perfect, because that’s the exact type of house that will look fantastic painted black. A fresh coat of black paint can breathe new life into a home’s plain exterior and gives old and dated homes a fresh new spin. A black exterior amplifies architecture making the lines of your home look shaper.

Going bold with your home’s exterior can feel overwhelming, though. If you aren’t ready to splash the black paint on your whole house, use it as an accent color on doors, siding and trim.

5. Off-White to Neutral

“Selecting an off-white neutral is always a safe bet in any region of the country,” says Gardemal. “Mid-tone colors which lean to the cooler side are preferable because they don’t appear yellow in the bright sunlight, and they are not too white which cheapens the look of a house.”

Gardemal also adds that off white sets the perfect backdrop for bold and bright shutters, doors and trim. “Painting existing brick has become very popular in the last five years to update an older home, but be sure that’s what you want to do because that’s not a decision you can walk back.”

For a home that always looks cheery on the outside, a soft or buttery yellow is the way to go.. “If you’re feeling bold, sunflower yellow can be dramatically unique and look gorgeous when contrasted against bright white trim and a mahogany stained garage,” says Kellie Burke, Founder and Principal Designer of Kellie Burke Interiors. “Remember that nature can also act as your pop of color: boxwoods add a deep green and hydrangeas can add the perfect blue.”
